Israel is Living Proof of the Power of God
Queen Victoria once asked her Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli,
“Mr. Prime Minister, what evidence can you give me of the existence of God?”
Disraeli thought for a moment and then replied, “The Jew, your majesty.”
The Jewish community have survived dispersions and genocidal campaigns against them, through the Bible and in the modern world. After the most severe act of cruelty against them, in which six million died, Israel rose in their ancient homeland. By all rights this should not have happened, the Jews should be as buried in the sands of history as the Hittites or Assyrians, or as stateless as the Gypsies, yet here they are, strong and free in Israel.
This shows the power of God in history as there can be no other logical explanation.
We see that in the Bible repeatedly, Amos 8:14-15 reads,
“‘I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel, and they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them;…I will plant them upon their land and they shall never again be plucked up out of the land which I have given them.’ says the Lord your God.”
Numerous other verses speak to the centrality of God’s plan for Israel being restored, Genesis 15:18; 17:2–8; 26:3
Pastor John Hagee has also written,
“We support Israel because all other nations were created by an act of men, but Israel was created by an act of God! The Royal Land Grant that was given to Abraham and his seed through Isaac and Jacob with an everlasting and unconditional covenant.”
How else can we explain the miracle of the State of Israel if not as the direct promised work of God?
The Gospels Proclaim a Duty to Protect the Jews and Israel
Romans 15:27 is, to me, one of the most critical passages in Scripture,
“For if the Gentiles have shared in their (the Jews) spiritual things, they are indebted to minister to them also in material things.”
We must not forget that the New Testament is as Jewish a document as the Torah. Jesus never denied being a Jew, He was circumcised as commanded to Moses, He was given a Bar Mitzvah, studied the Torah, kept kosher and surrounded Himself almost entirely with Jews. It was Jews who formed his disciples and much of the early Church, which was based in Jerusalem.
The Apostle Paul acknowledges this when he wrote the above in Romans. It is clearly a requirement for Christians to be concerned with the situation of the Jews, to be there for the defense against anti semitism, and to be like watchmen, concerned for the safety of Israel.
God will Treat Us in the Manner We Treat Israel
Genesis 12:3 reads “And I will bless them that bless thee and curse him that curseth thee; and in thee shall all nations of the earth be blessed.”
Here God is telling us two things. First, that through the Jews and Israel all the people of the world will be blessed. We can see this born out in history, it was to the Jews that God gave the Torah, knowledge of One God and His Laws, it is born out today as Israel makes contributions to medicine and technology while being the front line defense against Terror.
He is also letting us as Christians know that our deeds are being watched by God above, that how we treat the People of Israel is an important way that we will be judged. Fortunately God not only punishes us for bad behaviour but will reward us when we come to the defense of the Jews and Israel.
We must be mindful as Christians of our Biblical duty to comfort and protect the People of Israel.
